Online Registration is happening now. Read on for more information.

In-person registration for the 2017-2018 school year will take place Thursday, August 17th from 7:00am to 6:00pm in the Richards Great Hall, and Friday, August 18th from 8:00am to Noon in the Richards Great Hall.

Online Registration: What? Where? How?

Whether you knew it or not, if your child is a returning Richards student, you have attended registration. Every year, the day you go to school to pay fees, sign up for the PTO, and as of last year, find out who your child's teacher is, is registration day. On that day, someone from the front office of the school handed you a sheet of paper with all your family's contact info on it and asked you to verify whether or not it was still correct. Online registration is no different, except that you're verifying all you family's info online, and (hopefully) before in-person registration on the 17th&18th of August. Most students will already have their information in the Skyward system, and parents will be able to verify what is there, and edit as necessary. For example, if you have moved in the past year, Skyward might not have your new address and you will need to update the information. That's it. Then, on the 17th and 18th of August you will go to the Great Hall, find out who your child's teacher is, pay fees, sign up for the PTO, have school photos taken, and call it a day.

To fill out the necessary forms you will need to login to your Skyward Family Access account (this is the same site you go to for report cards, and to check your child’s attendance record). Click here to go to the Skyward login page. Once you’re there, enter your username and password. Can’t remember what those are? Click on the “Forgot your Login/Password?” under the Sign In button. Still can’t figure it out? Call Richards, (414) 963-3951.

What to Expect at In-Person Registration:

When you get there, the first thing you’re going to want to do is visit the school’s registration table. There you will receive a packet with your child’s/children’s classroom assignments, supply lists, etc. If you weren’t able to complete the online forms, computers will be available for you to do so.

Next, you need to pay for school and material fees. Payment for school and material fees is by cash or check only.

School Fees:

  • Half Day Junior Kindergarten (K4) Students: $76.00*
  • Senior Kindergarten (K5)-Fifth Grade Students: $106.00*

*This total includes the technology fee of $25 per child, with a maximum fee of $75 per family (for the technology fee only).

Material Fees:

  • Range from $5-$18

Milk and Ice Cream Cards (optional): Milk and Ice Cream Cards will be available for purchase during registration. Payment for milk and ice cream cards is by cash or check only. If you're using a check to pay for your school and material fees, and want to also pay for milk and ice cream cards by check, you have to write two separate checks.

  • Milk: $2 for a 20 milk punch card
  • Ice Cream: $2.50 for a 5 ice cream punch card

Once you're done with all of that, take a minute to do the obligatory Facebook post about your kid’s teacher assignments, and to see who everybody else got. While you’re on Facebook, make sure to like the Richards PTO page!

iPads will be made available for you to fill out your membership information. The annual membership fee is $15. Joining the PTO entitles you to a copy of the Buzz Book, Richards Student Directory. Additional copies are $5. Don’t want to join, but still want a Buzz Book? Buzz Books are $10.

A word about joining the PTO: just because you filled out a membership form and paid the $15 (or more, we gladly accept donations in any amount), doesn’t mean you’re automatically signing up to DO anything. By joining the PTO you are not making a commitment to volunteer, you are providing the financial support that make (amazing, fun, educational, enriching) PTO programs possible. Now, that being said, if you do want to help out you will have the opportunity during registration to sign up for as many committees as your heart desires.

What does the PTO do?

The PTO is responsible for every extracurricular activity Richards has to offer, and offers financial support for many programs, and events at the school, including funding for extra classroom supplies and equipment for the teachers and staff. The PTO organizes, staffs, and funds everything from the Newcomers Ice Cream Social at the start of the school year (Thursday, August 31st from 4:30-5:30 in the Great Hall) to Lego Club, Movie Night, and Roller Skating. The PTO also gives each teacher $100 every year to spend as they see fit. If anyone at Richards, parent, student, or staff alike, has an idea they need funding for they can submit a proposal to the PTO for a special disbursement. During the 2016-2017 school year, the PTO gave out over $2,400 in special disbursements. Perhaps most importantly, the PTO is responsible for recruiting Room Parents*, a critical group of volunteers who help our teachers by acting as a parent liaison for the classroom.

*Are you interested in being a room parent this year? Sign Up! We're actively recruiting for the 2017-2018 school year. It's an incredibly rewarding way to volunteer your time. You'll have the opportunity to get to know your child's teacher a little better, as well as the parents of the kids in the class. Click here to learn more about the role

Student photos will be taken during registration on Thursday, August 17th from 7am to 6pm. If you are unable to attend registration on Thursday, Student photos will be taken throughout the school day on September 14th.

There will be multiple photographers and photography stations set up on Thursday to insure the process moves quickly and efficiently.

There are three ways to pay for school photos:

  1. Prepay: Go to and enter “Richards Elementary School (Milwaukee, WI)” where it asks for the school. Then, select the button under School Portraits Pay Ahead that reads “Pay Now”. Follow the steps to select your packets or products and enter the required billing information (No student ID or homeroom required).
  2. Pay at Picture Day: There will be picture order forms at registration. Fill out the form and submit with a check or your credit card information.
  3. Pay After Picture Day: Have your student’s picture taken at registration. Go to and enter “Richards Elementary School (Milwaukee, WI)” where it asks for the school. Then, select the button under School Portraits View & Order that reads “View My Photo!” Follow the steps to select your packets or products and enter the required billing information. The photo preview may not be available for several weeks, however, so you may be prompted to order without viewing.
